HARD STARTING
Repeated cranking in order to start a 1986 Alliance/Encore vehicle, equipped with a 1.4L or 1.7L engine, may be due to a high voltage spike created by the starter circuit. This condition may be more prominent when temperatures are below - 1.0~ (30~F).
To correct this condition, install a resistor suppressed starter relay, PN 8933 003 934, in place of the existing starter relay.
PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. Locate the existing starter relay and remove each lead from the relay. Mark each lead with its starter relay connection.

4. Install the resistor suppressed starter relay using the previously removed mounting screws.
5. Connect all previously marked leads to the new starter relay at the appropriate terminals.
6. Connect the battery negative cable.
