Three different rear brake shoes are used, Fig. 4, referred to as Type I, Type II and Type III. Brake shoes and wheel cylinders are common to all three types. However, backing plates, springs, adjusters and mounting hardware are different. When servicing these assemblies, do not install two different type assemblies on the same axle.
Type I
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Raise and support vehicle.
3. Remove brake drum.
4. Place tool clamp Fre. 05 or equivalent, onto wheel cylinder.
5. Remove two brake shoe hold down springs and retaining pins.
6. Remove return springs, adjuster and brake shoes from backing plate, noting position for installation. Do not bend adjuster lever during removal.
7. Remove retracting springs from upper and lower shoe attaching points.
8. Remove parking brake cable from parking brake lever.
9. Remove parking brake lever from trailing shoe as follows:
a. Remove horseshoe retaining clip and spring washer.
b. Slide lever off parking brake lever pin on trailing shoe assembly.
10. Reverse procedure to install.
Type II & Type III
1. Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove wheel and brake drum.
2. Loosen parking brake cables.
3. Install suitable clamp on wheel cylinder.
4. Remove pull down springs from between lower hole on shoe and backing plate (Type II only), then remove adjuster spring and lever, return spring and the adjuster screw assembly.
5. Remove hold down springs and pins, then the leading brake shoe.
6. Remove trailing shoe and parking brake lever from backing plate, then disconnect cable from parking brake lever.
7. Pry open clip securing parking brake lever, then remove spring washer and lever from trailing shoe.
8. Clean backing plate and lubricate contact surfaces with suitable brake grease, then reverse procedure to install brake assembly.
