Timing Chain: Service and Repair
Fig. 16 Aligning timing marks.:
Removal
1. Remove timing cover, then rotate crankshaft until timing marks are aligned as shown in Fig. 16, and ensure is at TDC of No. 1 cylinder compression stroke.
Fig. 17 Timing chain tensioner removal.:
2. Tilt chain tensioner over as far as possible and install retaining tool Mot. 761 or equivalent, Fig. 17, then remove chain tensioner and retaining tool as an assembly. Use assembly plate from Mot. 761 to disconnect tensioner from retaining tool for inspection.
3. Remove camshaft sprocket retaining bolt.
4. Remove camshaft sprocket and timing chain using suitable puller to release sprocket from camshaft.
5. Install bolt in nose of crankshaft, then remove crankshaft sprocket using suitable puller.
Installation
1. Install crankshaft sprocket using suitable driver, ensuring timing mark faces out.

2. Install camshaft sprocket with timing chain, aligning timing marks as shown, Fig. 16.
3. Torque camshaft sprocket retaining bolt to 22 ft.lbs.

6. Remove tensioner and holder assembly from support plate, then mount on engine block ensuring dowel (B) engages slot (D) in tensioner shaft and free end of spring (F) is in hole (C) in block, Figs. 18 and 19.
8. Tighten tensioner bolt, then remove holding fixture.
9. Install timing cover as outlined.
