Interchange Of Parts

E1-E2 Clutch Assembly

When overhauling an MB1 used with the 1.4L engine, replacement of the E1 -E2 clutch assembly with the MB3 clutch assembly is recommended. The MB3 design offers improved durability over the MB1 design.

The two different assemblies can be identified by the friction plate drive tabs exposed on the outside. The MB3 clutch pack uses 5 friction plates (A) and the MB1 clutch pack uses 4 friction plates (B).

An MB3 design planetary gear assembly is also recommended when overhauling MB1 transmissions.

The improved design planetary gear can only be used with the latest MB3 E1-E2 clutch assemblies which were modified for use of the new design planetary gear. Identification diagrams for the latest MB3 E1-E2 clutch assembly and the improved planetary gear are shown.

The improved design planetary gear is identified by 3 roll pins (A). The latest MB3 E1-E2 clutch assembly is identified by measuring the distance between the crown (B) and the spring retaining plate (C). The latest MB3 E1-E2 clutch assembly has a distance of 27 mm.
