To: All Jeep/Eagle Dealers

Subject:
Safety Recall # 425 --
Engine Coolant Bottle Cap

Models:
All 1985, 1986 & 1987 Model Year Alliance and 1985 & 1986 Encore Passenger Cars

RECALL NOTIFICATION

The heater core on listed model cars may rupture if extreme engine overheating occurs for any reason. The condition is caused by excessive pressure buildup due to inadequate venting of steam by the engine coolant bottle cap.

The heater core is located in the occupant compartment. Therefore, if the core ruptures, hot engine coolant or steam may spray on the driver causing injury.

A revised engine coolant bottle cap must be installed to correct the condition. New caps will be mailed directly to owners of involved cars for installation by them (or, if preferred, by their dealers). The owner mailing will be implemented in July, starting with owners in Southern states. Mailing will continue to the remaining states as sufficient caps become available.

Important:
Some involved cars may be in dealers' new or used car stock. Be sure to complete the service on these cars as well as any which are brought in for other service before releasing them to owners.

Details of this service action are explained in the sections shown.
