Recall - Heater Core Defect: Overview
No. 541May, 1992
To: All Jeep/Eagle Dealers
Subject:
Safety Recall # 541 -- Heater Core
Models:
All 1983 Through 1987 Model Year Renault Alliance & Encore Vehicles
The heater core on listed model vehicles may fail. The core is located in the center console and failure of the core could allow hot cooling system fluid to spray on the driver's legs, possibly causing severe burn injury. To correct the condition, the heater core must be replaced.
Important:
Some of the involved vehicles may be on dealer used car lots. Be sure to complete the recall service on these vehicles immediately.
The recall will be implemented in stages, with owner notification occurring periodically as sufficient parts for each stage are available.
Important:
To ensure an uninterrupted parts supply for all dealers during each stage, an automatic replenishment system will be used. Additional supplies will be available continuously to support all service requirements as each owner notification stage is implemented.
The first stage is being implemented in about one week, with other stages following at intervals of a few weeks. We are planning on four owner notification stages with the vehicles involved in each stage as shown below:
^ Stage 1: 1983 Model Year. (All have 1.4L engine.)
^ Stage 2: Most of 1984 Model Year. (All have 1.4L engine.)
^ Stage 3: Rest of 1984 and 1985 & 1986 Model Year with 1.4L engine.
^ Stage 4: 1985 & 1986 Model Year with 1.7L engine and all 1987 Model Year (1.4L, 1.7L & 2.0L engines)
Details of this service action are explained in the following sections.
Note:
As an additional service aid, a videotape demonstrating the service procedures will be mailed separately to all Jeep/Eagle dealers at the same time that this dealer recall notification letter is mailed.
The tape does not demonstrate the first step of the service procedure which is Bleeder Tee Inspection. This step is necessary to assure proper air bleed when the cooling system is operated and topped off at the end of the procedure. It is important to do this step first to assure proper bleeding later.
Vehicle Lists/DIAL System Function 70
Each dealer to whom involved vehicles in Stage 1 of this recall (1983 Model Year) were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same location) will receive with this letter a vehicle list arranged in Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) sequence. Owners known to Chrysler are also listed. The lists are for dealer reference in arranging for service of involved vehicles.
As subsequent stages of the recall are implemented, Vehicle Lists for those stages will be mailed to involved dealers.
Each Jeep/Eagle dealer without a Vehicle List will receive an information copy of this letter by first class mail for use in performing the service on any involved vehicles.
At the same time that this letter and Stage 1 Vehicle Lists are mailed, all vehicles in the recall will be entered to DIAL System Function 70 for dealer reference as needed,
