Timing Chain: Service and Repair

Removal

1. Remove timing chain cover.
2. Remove the chain tensioner and the chain guide shoes.
3. Loosen the camshaft securing bolts.
4. Place a bolt, with a small centering hole drilled in the center of the bolt head, in the end of the crankshaft. Remove the crankshaft pulley key.
5. Remove crankshaft sprocket with timing chain using a suitable puller, holding camshaft in place while pulling, then remove the timing chain and sprocket.

Installation

1. Place chain over camshaft sprocket and align mark on sprocket with center of crankshaft and center of camshaft, Fig. 20, and ensure engine is at TDC of No. 1 cylinder compression stroke.
2. Place key on crankshaft.

3. Position crankshaft sprocket on chain with timing mark facing outward, align marks as shown, Fig. 21, then install crankshaft sprocket using suitable driver.
4. Install and tighten two camshaft clamp bolts, ensuring that camshaft sprocket is properly seated.
5. Install chain tensioner with its filter and thrust plate, then tighten two bolts.
6. Install chain play limiting pads.
7. Stretch timing chain and position play limiting pads so that there is approximately .020 inch clearance between chain and pads.
8. Install crankshaft pulley key.
9. Install timing cover centering dowels on cylinder block.
10. Install timing cover, using new gaskets.
