Wheel Bearing: Service and Repair
Rear Hub & Bearings Replace1. Remove grease cover with a suitable tool.
2. Remove cotter pin, locknut plate, axle nut and washer. Remove outer wheel bearing.
3. Pull brake drum or disc off stub axle. On vehicles with self-adjusting rear brakes, release brake adjustment by pushing a pin punch through access hole in backing plate.
4. Remove inner bearing with a suitable puller.
5. Place locating sleeve over stub axle. Assemble two split half-shells into position over bearing. The half-shells can be placed over bearing. The half-shells can be placed over bearing two ways so that bearing only can be pulled or so bearing and thrust washer can be pulled. Place sleeve over half-shells.
6. Pull off bearing assembly with suitable puller.
7. Remove bearing inner seal.
8. Clean bearings and repack with suitable wheel bearing grease.
9. Reinstall bearing seal, thrust washer and inner bearing. Reinstall drum or disc outer bearing, thrust washer and stub axle nut.
10. Adjust rear wheel bearings as described under ``Rear Wheel Bearings, Adjust.''
11. Install locknut plate and cotter pin. Place a small amount of grease in grease cup and install into position.
