Maintenance: Service and Repair

OXYGEN SENSOR INDICATOR
On some vehicles equipped with an oxygen sensor, a maintenance indicator is placed in the speedometer cable between the transmission and the speedometer. The indicator, usually attached to the air filter bracket, closes an electrical contact and activates a warning light on the instrument panel, alerting the driver to replace the sensor. The maintenance indicator will activate at approximately 30,000 mile intervals.
After the proper maintenance has been performed, the indicator light should be reset. To reset the indicator, follow the procedure as outlined below:
1. Using a suitable tool, cut seal plug wires from indicator cover, Fig. 8, then remove cover by disengaging clips.
2. Turn button (B) one quarter turn in direction of arrow and towards the ``O'' mark on indicator.
3. Replace cover and secure using new wire.
EGR MAINTENANCE INDICATOR
On some vehicles equipped with an EGR system, a maintenance indicator similar to the oxygen sensor indicator above is used. This indicator is also attached to the air filter bracket and activates a warning lamp on the instrument panel at 25,000 mile intervals. Resetting the indicator, Fig. 8, is exactly the same procedure as outlined in the oxygen sensor indicator procedure above.
