Rack End Bushing, Replace

This procedure can only be done on vehicles equipped with manualsteering.
1. Remove axial ball joint, refer to ``Axial Ball Joint Assembly, Replace'' procedure.

2. Turn steering wheel to the left, then remove snap ring and outer thrust washer, Fig. 10.
3. Pry out rubber bushing using suitable screwdriver.

4. Fabricate end bushing removal tool as follows:
a. Drill two .157 inch diameter holes in a piece of flat iron 1.063 inch apart, Fig. 11.
5. Screw two 3mm screws through flat iron into rack end bushing, then remove bushing by turning steering wheel, Fig. 11.
6. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Clean rack and rack end bushing housing, then coat rack and bushing with Molykote BR 2 or equivalent.
b. Seat bushing assembly by temporarily screwing on axial ball joint and turning steering wheel until assembly completely enters housing.
c. Ensure snap ring is properly installed in groove.
