Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints: Service and Repair
Front Drive Axle Replace1. Compress front half-axle and place spacer T.Av. 509-01 or equivalent between lower arm pivot shaft and shock absorber bottom pillar shaft.
2. Raise and support side of vehicle to be serviced and remove wheel.
3. Using tool Rou. 604-01 or equivalent remove stub axle nut.
4. Loosen but do not remove upper ball joint nut and steering arm ball joint nut.
5. Using tool T.Av. 476 or equivalent, loosen ball joint cones.
6. Remove brake caliper assembly without disconnecting lines.
7. Remove ball joint nuts and tilt stub axle carrier to disengage driveshaft.
8. Using drift pin B. Vi. 31-01 or equivalent, drive out roll pins from coupling on transmission housing side.
9. Remove driveshaft.
10. Reverse procedure to install, torquing upper ball joint nut to 48 ft.lbs., steering arm ball joint to 30 ft.lbs., stub axle nut to 185 ft.lbs., and wheel lug nuts to 59 ft.lbs.
