Engine: Service and Repair


Engine and transaxle are removed as an assembly on these models.

1. Disconnect cables from battery and remove battery.
2. Disconnect washer hoses, mark position of bolts securing hinges to hood, support hood and remove bolts, then lift hood from vehicle.
3. Remove block drain plug from right side of engine and drain coolant, then drain engine oil.
4. On models with A/C, isolate compressor by turning service valves to the fully clockwise (front seated) position, then disconnect hoses and electrical connector from compressor. Plug hoses and open fittings on compressor.
5. On all models, remove air cleaner assembly and disconnect accelerator, throttle and cruise control cables, as equipped.
6. Remove gas cap from tank filler neck, then disconnect fuel lines. 1985-87 models are equipped with a fuel tank vent check valve. Gas cap must be removed to release pressure prior to disconnecting fuel lines.
7. Disconnect radiator hoses and remove radiator.
8. Mark and disconnect necessary electrical connectors and vacuum hoses from engine and transaxle.
9. Disconnect heater hoses, brake booster hose, clutch cable and transaxle cooler lines, as equipped.
10. Disconnect gear selector rod at transaxle lever (manual) or transaxle pivot lever (automatic).
11. Raise and support vehicle and remove front wheels, brake calipers and driveshafts.
12. Disconnect wiring from starter motor and disconnect ground straps from engine and transaxle. Engine ground is attached to block directly under manifolds.
13. Disconnect hoses from power steering pump and plug hoses and pump fittings.
14. Remove speedometer cable from transaxle.
15. Remove nuts and bolts securing front and rear transaxle mounts to subframe.
16. Connect suitable lifting equipment, raise engine and ensure all necessary components have been disconnected, then remove engine and transaxle from vehicle as an assembly.
17. Install engine/transaxle assembly, align mounts, and torque fasteners to 25 ft.lbs.
18. Reverse remaining procedure to complete installation, then fill cooling system as outlined.
