Torsion Bar: Service and Repair
Rear Torsion Bar Replace1. Raise and support vehicle with wheels hanging free.
2. Remove sway bar.
3. Remove wheel and shock absorber on side being serviced.
4. Using impact tool Emb. 880 or suitable slide hammer, extract torsion bar from axle tube.

5. Fabricate suspension arm positioning tool as shown in Fig. 5.
6. Install fabricated tool in place of shock absorber.

7. Turn nut until length of tool (X), Fig. 6, equals 24.04 inches on all except GS and GTA models, 22.9 inches on GTA with green and orange color code, 22.6 inches on GTA with green and white color code, 23.1 inches on GS with green and yellow color code, or 22.8 inches on GS with white and orange color code. Color code consists of 2 paint marks on top of the suspension arm.
8. Coat torsion bar splines with suitable lubricant and install it in bearing and arm, feeling for position in which it will slide into both easily. Do not interchange torsion bars, and ensure bar is installed properly in axle tube. Left and right torsion bars are identified by diamond shaped symbols on the splined end of the bar. Left torsion bars have 2 marks, while right torsion bars have 3 marks. In addition, the number of splines on each end of the bar is different. there are 24 splines at the arm end of the torsion bar and 25 splines at the anchorage end.
9. Remove fabricated tool, then install shock absorber and sway bar.
10. Install wheel and lower vehicle, then check and adjust underbody height as outlined in ``Wheel Alignment Section.''
