Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

Engine and transaxle must be removed as an assembly.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove air intake assembly.
2. Drain cooling system, crankcase and transaxle.
3. Disconnect radiator hoses and electrical connectors from radiator and cooling fan, then remove fan and radiator.
4. Disconnect electrical connectors, heater and vacuum hoses, accelerator cable and brake booster hose from engine.
5. Apply penetrating oil to exhaust pipe clamp bolts, remove and discard bolts, and disconnect pipe from manifold.
6. Disconnect electrical connectors and ground strap, oil cooler lines and gear selector linkage from transaxle.
7. Raise and support front of vehicle and remove front wheels.
8. Remove brake caliper mounting bolts and secure calipers aside.
9. Disconnect tie rods from steering knuckles using a suitable puller, and remove lower shock absorber mounting bolts.
10. Remove 3 bolts securing right driveshaft boot plate to transaxle and drive out roll pin securing left driveshaft to stemmed output gear.
11. Disconnect driveshafts from transaxle by pulling outward on steering knuckles.
12. Attach lifting hook and chain MOT.878 or equivalent and support engine/transaxle assembly.
13. Remove front and rear mounts, then lift engine/transaxle assembly from vehicle.
14. Remove torque converter cover and engine to transaxle brace.
15. Mark position of torque converter and remove bolts securing converter to flywheel. Converter and drive plate must be properly aligned to ensure correct ignition system operation. Operation of the ignition control module is dependent upon a correct signal input from the torque converter circumference and TDC Sensor.
16. Remove retaining bolts and separate transaxle from engine.
17. Reverse procedure to install.
