SUBJECT: FITTING ENGINE BLOCK HEATER ISSUE: 12/84-724 P/N 02-04-255 M85 MODEL 900
The current accessory Engine Block Heater (P/N 02-04-255) may be fitted to all 1985 model Saab 900's. Please note the new location of the freeze plug (right center) and the positioning of the heating element within the block (9 o'clock).

FIGURE 1:
1. Drain the coolant and remove specified freeze plug.
Tap on one side of freeze plug with a hammer and drift to cock the freeze plug in the hole. Grab the free edge with vise grips and work the plug out of the hole.
2. Thoroughly clean the freeze plug hole removing any burrs, compound, paint or rough spots.
3. Apply a coating of grease to the heater O-ring and machined surface of hole in block. (To facilitate installation and prevent O-ring damage.)
4. Back-off heater nut as far as possible, holding heater with element pointing in proper direction and finger on end of screw. Insert element and one end of locking channel into freeze plug hole per figure #1.
5. Center heater in hole and press in. Tighten to 20 in.lbs. (23 kpcm). See figure #2.
6. Install power cord and route to grille, tie strapping where necessary to insure that cord does not touch engine, hot pipes or any moving parts.
7. Refill cooling system and operate engine to check for leaks.
WARNING! BEFORE CONNECTING HEATER TO POWER SOURCE MAKE SURE THAT THE ELEMENT IS IMMERSED IN COOLANT. NEVER ENERGIZE HEATER WITHOUT BEING IMMERSED IN COOLANT OTHERWISE THE ELEMENT SHEATH COULD BURST, CAUSING PERSONAL INJURY.
