Introduction
This Service Campaign affects all 1982-84 Saab 900 models. Saab-Scania of America, Inc. will now accept claims for the replacement of separated crankshaft pulleys for these vehicles even after the expiration of the regular new car warranty. Owners are eligible for pulley replacement at no charge for parts and labor until June 30, 1987. Your dealership received a mailgram notice about this policy on May 16, 1985.
Owners are being advised of this (see text of Owner Notice) and that their car is to be inspected in conjunction with prescribed maintenance services. Saab-Scania is not calling the affected vehicles in for inspection at this time and will not pay for an inspection of a vehicle brought in for a visual check of the crankshaft pulley only. If the owner notices a metallic scraping noise from the engine compartment, a possible indicator that a failure is occurring, the car should be brought in to the dealer immediately. There will be no initial order of parts for this campaign. Order parts as necessary from your Saab parts depot.

Reimbursement For Prior Repair:
An owner of a 1982-84 Saab that has had a crankshaft pulley replaced due to separation prior to this campaign is eligible for reimbursement by Saab-Scania of America.
Review the previous repair documentation with the owner and determine if the eligibility requirements for reimbursement as described in this bulletin (pulley separation only, 1982-84 models) have been met.
If eligibility requirements are met, advise the owner as follows:
1. Owners should be instructed to submit requests for reimbursement to the Consumer Relations Representative in the appropriate Regional Office in Orange, Conn.; Schiller Park, IL; or Carson, CA. They must include documentation which clearly specifies the repair and relevant charges for parts and labor.
2. Reimbursement will be made for the amount paid by the owner which is directly related to the failure of the crankshaft pulley. This includes oil pump cover or engine damage if caused specifically by crankshaft pulley separation.
3. All reimbursements will be handled by Saab-Scania of America.
4. Upon referral to Saab-Scania of America, all further correspondence with the owner will be handled by Saab.
Inspection Procedure:
1. At each regular service, make an initial check of the crankshaft pulley. With the car on the lift, check the distance from the inner surface of the pulley (see diagram A) to the surface of the oil pump cover. This may be accomplished by stacking feeler gauges together and measuring the stack with a vernier caliper. A distance of 9 mm 0.35") or less indicates that separation has probably occurred and the technic an should prepare to replace the crankshaft pulley (see step 2).
If clearance is more than 9 mm (0.35") the crankshaft pulley is O.K. and need not be examined further until the next service.
2. If while replacing the pulley you wish to verify separation, use a straight edge and a feeler gauge to measure the distance between the crankshaft pulley center section and the surface of the outermost pulley ring (AC drive sheave removed, if equipped). A distance of more than 2 mm indicates that separation has occurred.
Replace the pulley using the guidelines given in Service Manual Section 2, page 216-3 to 216-5. Don't forget the allowance to torque reading when using the special wrench (P/N 83-92-961).
