Subject: Water Leak At Rear Spoiler

Application: 900 Convertible


On 900 convertibles, it is possible for water to work its way in behind the rear spoiler side assemblies and the moisture barrier resulting in wet carpeting in the rear floor area. To prevent possible water leakage, a plastic strip that more effectively seals the area has been introduced into production from chassis number M7001771 -. The plastic sealing strips are also suitable as a repair on earlier cars.

Sealing Strip Installation Procedure

The following procedure should be performed on both sides of the car.


1. Remove the rear spoiler side assemblies as per subsection 830 in section 8:5 of the 900 Service Manual.


2. Ease the top fold in the moisture barrier off the side panel (Figure 1). On some cars, it may be held in place by a strip of plastic with the words "AUT HEATED SEAT" on it. If so, this strip can be discarded.





3. Raise the top cover side flap to gain access to the V-shaped notch in the body panel.


4. Press some strip caulk into the notch so that the recess is completely filled (Figure 2). If sealant is already present, build it up as necessary.


5. Fold the moisture barrier back down over the panel.





6. Press the plastic sealing strip, P/N 41 53 003, over the moisture barrier as shown in Figure 3.





Spoiler Drain Hole Modification Procedure

7. Inspect the size of the drain hole in the spoiler side assembly. The hole will be one of three widths: 5, 20 or 50 mm. If the width of the hole is 5 mm, enlarge it to 20 mm. Make the hole extension towards the front of the car (Figure 4).


Note
Do not alter the depth of the hole.


8. Refit the spoiler side assembly as per the instructions in the Service Manual.

For warranty claims, use Failure Coding 81174-56-9-01-05. Time allowance is 2.3 hours for cars with VIN's up to L7011109 and 1.1 hours for VIN's L7011110-. Time should be entered as straight time.
