Valve Clearance: Adjustments

On eight valve engines, valve clearance should be checked and, if necessary, adjusted every 15,000 miles. Valve clearances for eight valve non turbocharged engines should be .009 inch for intake valves and .017 inch for exhaust valves. Valve clearances for eight valve turbocharged engines should be .019 inch for both intake and exhaust valves.
On sixteen valve engines, valve lash is maintained by hydraulic cam follower, and no adjustment is necessary.

SIXTEEN VALVE ENGINE
On 900 models, intake valves are located toward driver's side of engine and exhaust valves are located toward passenger side of engine. On 9000 models, intake valves are located on front side of engine and exhaust valves are located on rear side of engine.

Valves, Adjust
EIGHT VALVE ENGINES
1. Rotate crankshaft until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC on compression stroke, then remove valve cover.
2. Check clearance between camshaft and depressor with high point of cam lobe facing upward using suitable feeler gauges, and record clearance for each valve.
3. If clearance is not within 0.003 inch of specification on non-turbo engines, or within 0.002 inch on turbocharged engines, the shim underneath the valve depressor must be replaced with one that will bring the clearance within specifications.
