January 13, 1989IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL NOTICE - PLEASE READ WIRE HARNESS PROTECTION - All 1987 and 1988 Saab 900 Models Saab Recall No. 273. NHTSA No. 88V-173
Dear Saab Owner:
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Saab-Scania AB has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in 1987 and 1988 model year Saab 900 models. Our records indicate you are the current owner of such a vehicle.
Due to production variations, the vehicle wire harness may chafe at certain locations in the dashboard and under the rear seat. If such chafing should occur, an electrical short could develop, resulting in smoke, or possibly, fire in the passenger compartment.
Saab-Scania of America. Inc. has made arrangements with its authorized Saab dealers to remedy this defect without charge, commencing January 30, 1989, by which time they will have received the necessary parts and instructions. We urge you to make an appointment with your Saab dealer to have this work performed as soon thereafter as conveniently possible. To prevent the occurrence of chafing, your Saab dealer will install protective covers at critical locations on the wire harness. Approximately one hour will be required by your dealer to complete the work.
Bring this letter and the enclosed preprinted recall claim voucher to your dealer on the day of your appointment. When the recall work is completed, please sign the recall claim voucher in the space provided. This form must be submitted by your dealer to Saab-Scania of America. Inc. to maintain our recall records and to update periodic recall reports to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
In the interim before this recall work is completed, should you detect smoke in the passenger compartment while driving your car, we advise that you pull over to the side of the road as soon as it is reasonably safe and possible to do so, promptly switch off the ignition, and evacuate the vehicle of all occupants. Attempts should not be made to restart the vehicle. In all cases, notify emergency personnel immediately and contact your Saab dealer. The negative battery cable under the engine hood may be disconnected by emergency personnel to minimize damage to your vehicle.
If you should experience difficulty in making arrangements for the safety recall modification to be performed, our Consumer Relations Staff is available to assist you in resolving any such problem and may be contacted through our toll free number at 800-255-9007 (Connecticut residents may call 800-548-1156).
