Cars With ETS

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES P0120, P0122 (cars with ETS)
Throttle position sensor, malfunctioning or not working at all

Fault symptom

CHECK ENGINE lamp (MIL) on. Fast idling speed. A/C compressor not working.

Conditions.
If there is a short circuit/open circuit, a DTC will be generated after 5 seconds.

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

1. Checking DTCs in the ETS
Connect the Scan Tool.
Ignition switch in the ON position.
Select "ETS".
Select "READ FAULT CODES".

The following diagnostic trouble codes concern the throttle position sensor and indicate that the input signal to the ETS control module is not OK or absent: 25240/45240, 25242/45242, 25250/45250, 25252/45252 and 25290/45290.

If there are ETS trouble codes stored in the memory, fault diagnosis of the Traction Control System (TCS) will be neccessary.

If no ETS trouble codes are stored in the memory, continue with point 2.

2. Checking The Electrical Interface
Plug a breakout box (BOB) into the ETS control module connector (the ETS control module should not be connected). Ignition switch in the ON position.

Take a voltage reading across:
- pins 26 and 1 Batt+

Take a reading of the current across:
- Pins 2 and 1- about 3 mA.

If the readings are OK, continue with point 3.

If any reading is not OK, continue with point 4.

3. Checking The Signal
Connect the ETS control module to the BOB. Start the engine and run it at idling speed.

Take a reading of the signal across pins 26 and 1. Should be about 0.7 V, 200 Hz, 5% (+).

If the reading is OK, continue with point 5.

If the reading is not OK, fault diagnosis of the Traction Control System (TCS) will be neccessary.

4. Checking The Wiring Harness
Check The Wiring between pin 57 of the Trionic control module and pin 26 of the ETS control module.

Check The Wiring for continuity and shorting.

If the wiring is OK, continue with point 5.

If the wiring is not OK, rectify the fault.

5. Final Check
Clear the diagnostic trouble codes, drive the car on test and check whether the trouble code is generated afresh.

If the DTC is generated again, refer to Before Replacing A Control Module.

If the DTC is not generated again, the action taken to rectify the fault was correct, otherwise the fault is of intermittent nature.
