Balance Shaft Chain: Description and Operation

The balance shafts are driven from a sprocket on the crankshaft by a 7-mm-pitch chain at twice the crankshaft speed. An idler-wheel sprocket interposed between the crankshaft sprocket and the inlet-side balance shaft causes the balance shafts to rotate in opposite directions.
