Transmission Leakage

FAULT SYMPTOM
- Transmission shows fluid leakage.

ACTION

NOTE: Fill in the test form. When returning items, the test form should be included.

1. Checking leakage.
- Check where the transmission is leaking. Mark the places where it is leaking.
- If it is not obvious where the transmission is leaking, it should be cleaned and leakage spray should be used.
- Necessary action depends on how great the leakage is, see below.
- Leaking gaskets and seals:
Proceed to point 2.
- Leakage caused by cracking or pores:
Proceed to point 3.
- Leakage at bleeding valve:
Happens when driving at high speed for prolonged periods.
- Proceed to point 4.
2. Leaking gaskets and seals.
- Some gaskets can be changed with the transmission in the car, while others require that the transmission is first removed.
- The following gaskets and seals can be changed with the transmission in the car:
Valve body cover: rubber section
Pressure connector: metal gasket
Coolant hose connector: metal gasket
Intermediate gear cover: gasket
Output shaft: : stuffing box
Selector shaft: stuffing box
Inner driver cover: O-ring
Kick-down cable/transmission: O-ring
Filter cover: O-ring
Speedometer drive: O-ring
Cover for brake band servo (cars without ABS): O-ring
Pushrod, adjusting brake band C': O-ring
- When changing the following gaskets and seals, the transmission must be removed from the car:
Torque converter seal: stuffing box
Torque converter housing/gear case: gasket
Cover for brake band servo (cars with ABS): O-ring
- After action, proceed to point 9.
3. Leakage due to cracking or pores.
- Clean the transmission and use leakage spray to detect those places where the transmission is leaking. Mark leaks.
- Change the torque converter housing, gear case or the transmission as required.
4. Checking fluid level.
- Drive the car until the transmission has reached operating temperature (approx. 80° C).
- Place the car on level ground and apply the hand brake. Run the engine at idling speed and engage D, R and P each for 15 seconds.
- Using the Intelligent SAAB Tester (ISAT), or equivalent scan tool, check that temperature is 80° C.
- Check fluid level.
- Fluid level should be between MIN and MAX on the dipstick scale for 80.
- If fluid level is OK:
Proceed to point 5.
- If fluid level is too high:
Drain fluid so that the level is correct.
Then drive the car and check if there is still leakage.
If there is still leakage, proceed to point 5.
5. Checking fluid.
- Check the colour and age of the fluid.
- Old fluid can foam so much that it causes leakage at the bleeding valve.
- If the fluid does not need to be changed:
Proceed to point 6.
- If the fluid needs changing:
Change the fluid, and proceed to point 7.
6. On models with turbocharger, checking turbocharger delivery pipe.
- Check if there is air leaking from the turbo charger delivery pipe and O-rings.
- If there is leakage:
Change the leaking parts.
Then drive the car and check if there is still fluid leakage.
If there is still fluid leakage, proceed to point 8.
- If there is no leakage:
Proceed to point 8.
7. On all models, checking leakage.
- Drive the car and check if there is still leakage.
- If there is no leakage:
The fault has been corrected.
- If there is still leakage:
Proceed to point 8.
8. Changing bleeding valve to new bleeding valve part No. 43 85 720, or equivalent.
9. Checking fluid level.
- Place the car on level ground and, with the engine running, check transmission fluid level using the dipstick.

NOTE:
^ The dipstick has two scales, one for 40° C and one for 80° C.
^ Use a lint-free cloth to wipe the dipstick.

- If necessary, top up with DEXRON II automatic transmission fluid and check that there is no more leakage.
