Fault Code 5/33630

Malfunction indicated
Throttle butterfly actuator motor malfunction.

Fault symptom
The car goes into Limp Home mode. The TCS CTRL lamp lights up.

Test procedure

1 Create a vacuum in the throttle housing vacuum chamber to relieve the spring of load. Also disconnect the rubber hose from the throttle housing. This will enable the butterfly to be adjusted by hand.

2 With the ignition switched oft and the ETS control unit unplugged and connected to a BOB, check the resistance of the motor across sockets 20 and 21. Slowly change the position of the butterfly from closed to full open. Stop at each position sufficiently long to obtain a reliable reading.

Note: Only the resistance readings obtained when the butterfly is held still should be compared with the specifications.
The resistance should be higher than 1.2 Ohms.
If the resistance readings are correct, continue with point 4.
If resistance readings lower than 1.2 Ohms are obtained, continue with point 3.

3 Unplug the throttle housing connector and measure the resistance across throttle housing pins 1 and 7. Measure the resistance in the same way as in point 2.
The resistance should be higher than 1.2 Ohms.
If the readings obtained are too low under point 2 but correct under point 3, check the GN and GN/WH leads between pins 1 and 7 of the connector and pins 20 and 21 of the control unit for continuity or shorting to earth.
If the resistance readings obtained are too low under both point 2 and point 3, change the throttle housing.

4 Check the GN and GN/WH leads between pins 1 and 7 of the connector and pins 20 and 21 of the control unit for continuity or shorting to earth.

5 If no fault can be found and the above tests check out OK, clear the fault code and drive the car to see whether it is generated afresh. If it is, try fitting an ETS control unit which is known to be OK.
