Addressing Customer Complaints of Rattles or Squeaks in Dashboard

Application: -1995 9000 Models

Several improvements have been made to reduce dashboard rattles and/or squeaks. This bulletin addresses several steps to take to isolate and remedy complaints. Check the VIN Serial No. of the vehicle and then be sure to take the vehicle on a road test to first determine which action listed should be followed.

Action:

A. Rattles and squeaks in the top section of the dashboard, right-hand side:

-1995 9000 models up to and including VIN Serial No. S1001408

1. Remove the door seals from the A-pillars. Remove the A-pillar trim.

2. Remove the speaker grilles.





3. Remove the top section of the dashboard. See Figure 1.

4. Pry the speaker bracket away from the dashboard support so they cannot meet. See Figure 2, item 4.





5. Tighten the front screw securing the dashboard support at a torque of 2 Nm (1.5 ft.lbs.). See Figure 2, item 5.

6. Fit the top section of the dashboard in place.

7. Fit a washer, P/N 84 57 541. in place between the top section of the dashboard and the speaker bracket. See Figure 2, item 7.

8. Tighten the screws securing the top section of the dashboard. See Figure 2, item 8.

B. Rattles/squeaks in the fuse box holder cover (cars with passenger side airbag):

-1994 9000 models up to and including VIN Serial No. R1030179

1. Open the fuse holder cover.





2. Apply two rectangular pieces of felt tape. P/N 96 98 846, as shown in Figure 3, item 2.

3. Close the cover.

C. Rattles/squeaks in airbag connector (passenger side only):

-1995 9000 models up to and including VIN Serial No. S1003179

1. Remove the two screws on the airbag lower cover.

2. Remove the airbag unit cover on the passenger side taking care not to damage the clips. See Figure 4, item 2. You can obtain special Airbag removal tool, P/N 82 92 997 from Kent-Moore. Use of this tool facilitates removal of the airbag cover.





3. Apply anti-rattle tape, P/N 46 65 840 as shown in Figure 4, item 3.

4. Refit the lower cover.

D. Rattles/squeaks in center air vent:

All 9000

1. Remove the door seals from the A-pillars. Remove the A-pillar trim.

2. Remove the speaker grilles.

3. Remove the upper section of the dashboard.

4. Press the dashboard nozzle and air duct towards the cabin.

5. Lift up the rear end of the air duct and remove it.

6. Undo the dashboard nozzle catches and lift out the nozzle to the rear. (Make sure the hooks of the air ducts engage with each other on subsequent reassembly.)

7. Lift out the center vent and the duct connecting it to the fan housing.





8. Apply butyl tape. P/N 30 17 795 or 3M Ribbon Sealer P/N 51135/08610 to A and B as shown in Figure 5.

9. Press down the catches (Figure 4, item C) securing the vent to the duct. Bend up the edge slightly and apply butyl tape under the joint at D as shown in Figure 5.

10. Reassemble.

E. Rattles/squeaks in wiring on cars with adjustable airbag steering wheel:

1995 models only

1. Remove the steering column covers.

2. Move the steering wheel first to its top position and then to its bottom position.

3. Check the points where the steering wheel stalk switch wiring is in contact with the kneepad or other electrical leads.





4. Wrap felt tape, P/N 96 98 846, around the wiring connected to the switches on both sides to prevent it from making a squeaking noise it it rubs against the kneepad or other electrical leads. See Figure 6, item 4.

5. Move the steering wheel to different positions and check that the squeaking noise has been eliminated.

6. Refit the steering column covers.
