Fuel Injection

Fuel injection with the Motronic 2.8.1 system is sequential, i.e. it follows the firing order of the engine.

Injection duration is determined by the electronic control module, mainly on the basis of the following information:
^ mass air flow, intake air
^ engine speed
^ coolant temperature
^ oxygen content of the exhaust gases
^ throttle position

The engine has two oxygen sensors, one for the front bank of cylinders (2, 4 and 6) and one for the rear bank of cylinders (1, 3 and 5). With the information from both oxygen sensors, the control module can adjust the injection duration separately for each bank of cylinders.

The opening duration of the injectors varies from about 3 ms at idling speed to about 18 ms at wide open throttle.
