Shift Lock P-Interlock
Cars with automatic transmission for USA and Canada are equipped with a shift lock. This means that there are a number of additional parts in order to ensure the following functions:
- The ignition key must be set to "drive" and the foot brake must be depressed before the selector lever can be moved from position P.
- The selector lever must be in position P in order to remove the ignition key from the ignition switch.
There is a microswitch in the selector lever bracket which indicates when the selector lever is set to position P.
In order to lock the selector lever in position P. there is a solenoid, which in its inactivated position locks the selector lever and prevents the selector lever from being released. The solenoid is activated so that the lever can be moved from position P when the foot brake is applied and the ignition key is in position "drive".
In the steering column, beside the starter key lock cylinder, there is a solenoid which locks the key until the selector lever is in position P.
Note that the car must not be left for any period of time with the key inside and the selector lever in a position other than P. As the solenoid in the steering column consumes a large amount of current, power may be lost.
When power is lost, it is not possible to move the selector lever from position P. For this reason, make sure that the selector lever is not moved to position P of there is no power in the car.
