Speedometer Gear, A/T: Service and Repair

NOTE:
^ Component identifier numbers used in the following illustrations relate to specific steps in the procedures below.
^ Due to different designs, there are several ways to remove the speedometer drive

Removal
1. Remove the speedometer cable or the electronic sensor from the speedometer drive.
- First remove any bracket from the electronic sensor.
2. Types:
- Design 1: Use a screw driver to press up the toothed ring.
- Design 2: Tap the locking pin out of the gear case.
- Design 3: Undo the screw securing the speedometer drive.
3. The speedometer drive can now be removed.
- Remove the drive from its sleeve.
- Remove the O-ring and seal from the sleeve.

Installation
1. Install the O-ring to the speedometer drive sleeve.
2. Install the drive in its sleeve and install the seal.
There are two designs of seal.
- In the earlier design, the seal is placed uppermost on the sleeve.
- In the later design, the seal is pressed into the sleeve.
3. Install the speedometer drive in the torque converter housing so that the hexagon on the drive is inserted in the corresponding hole in the torque converter housing.
- This means that the sleeve can rotate.
4. Depending on design, install the toothed ring, locking screw or tap in the locking pin.
5. Install the speedometer cable or electronic sensor.
- The securing bracket should always be installed if the electronic sensor is attached using a toothed ring.
