Drive Range Faults






FAULT SYMPTOM
- Engine cannot be started.
- Car driven forward/backwards when selector lever is in position N.

ACTION
1. Select symptom.
Choose between the following symptoms.
- No drive:
Proceed to point 2.
- Slipping or vibration when the car starts moving:
Proceed to point 3.
- Harsh engagement or jerking when the selector lever is moved from position N to position D at engine speeds below 1500 RPM:
Proceed to point 4.
- No shifting in certain gears with cold or hot transmission:
Proceed to point 5.
- Car starting with incorrect gear engaged:
Proceed to point 10.
- Certain gears are jumped:
Proceed to point 13.
- Transmission seizing and can only be driven with first gear locked, Reverse gear also missing:
Governor seizing.
Clean or change governor.
- Shifting at incorrect speed:
Proceed to point 15.
- Faulty shifting:
Proceed to Point 18.
2. No drive.
Investigate following causes.
- Selector lever control or cable incorrectly adjusted:
Check and, if necessary, adjust.
- Fluid strainer blocked:
Change fluid strainer.
- Time control valve 3 4 seizing:
Dismantle the valve body and check the valve and clean valve body. If fault remains, change valve body.
- Torque converter relief valve stuck in open position:
Dismantle the pump and check the valve.
If necessary, change the valve.
- Clutch A faulty:
Check and, if necessary, change clutch A.
- One-way clutch 1 faulty:
Check and, if necessary, change 1st one-way clutch.
3. Slipping or vibration when the car starts to move.
Investigate following causes.
- Clutch A damaged:
Check and, if necessary, change clutch A.
- Seal on turbine shaft damaged:
Seal used by fluid supply to clutch A.
Check and, if necessary, change the seal.
- O-rings on plunger to clutch A damaged:
Check and, if necessary, change the O-rings.
- Pressure washer between clutch E and A damaged:
Check and, if necessary, change the pressure washer.
4. Harsh engagement or jerking when the selector lever is moved from position N to D at engine speeds below 1500 RPM.
Investigate following causes.
- Accumulator A seizing or its spring is faulty:
Check spring and accumulator A.
- The ball in the time control valve 3-4 is leaking:
Dismantle the valve body and check the ball and clean valve body.
If the fault remains, change the valve body.
- Clutch A damaged:
Check and, if necessary, change clutch A.
Especially check the O-rings.
5. No shifting with either warm or cold transmission.
Choose between the following symptoms.
- No shifting both between 1 and 2 and between 2 and 1:
Proceed to point 6.
- No up-shift from 1 to 2:
Check and adjust brake band C'.
Check O-rings on servo plunger for brake band C'.
Check brake C.
- No shifting between 2 and 3 or between 3 and 2:
Proceed to point 7.
- No up-shift from 2 to 3:
Clutch E is damaged.
Check, and if necessary, change clutch E.
Check especially the O-rings in clutch E plunger.
Check the seals on the engine shaft and turbine shaft.
- No shifting both between 3 and 4 and between 4 and 3:
Proceed to point 8.
- No up-shift from 3 to 4:
Proceed to point 9.
6. No shifting between 1 and 2 and between 2 and 1.
Investigate following causes.
- Contamination in governor:
Clean or change the governor.
- Upshift valve 1-2 seizing:
Dismantle the valve body and check the valve.
7. No shifting between 2 and 3 and between 3 and 2.
Investigate following causes.
- Contamination in governor:
Clean or change the governor.
- Upshift valve 2-3 seizing:
Dismantle the valve body and check the valve.
8. No shifting between 3 and 4 and between 4 and 3.
Investigate following causes.
- Contamination in governor:
Clean or change the governor.
- Upshift valve 3-4 seizing:
Dismantle the valve body and check the valve.
9. No upshift from 3 to 4.
Investigate following causes.
- Brake band C' incorrectly adjusted:
Adjust brake band.
- Shift sequencing valve 2-3-4 seizing:
Dismantle the valve body and check the valve.
- 3rd lock-up valve seizing:
Dismantle the valve body and check the valve.
- Brake band C' damaged:
Check and, if necessary, change the brake band.
10. Car starts with incorrect gear engaged Choose between the following symptoms.
- Car starts in 2nd:
Proceed to point 11.
- Car starts in 3rd gear and engine stops:
Proceed to point 12.
11. Car starts in 2nd gear.
Investigate following causes.
- Brake band C' applied too hard:
Adjust the brake band.
- Seal on governor flange damaged:
Check and, if necessary, change the seals.
Check especially the seal in the middle.
- Plunger in governor seizing:
Clean or change the governor.
- Upshift valve 1-2 seizing:
Dismantle the valve body and check the valve.
12. Car starting in 3rd gear and engine stops.
- Seal on governor flange damaged:
Check and, if necessary, change the seals.
- Governor seizing:
Clean or change the governor.
- Upshift valves 1-2 and 2-3 seizing:
Dismantle the valve body and check the valves.
- Leaking partition plate, clutch B is permanently applied:
Check and, if necessary, change the partition plate.
13. Certain gears are jumped.
Choose between the following symptoms.
- Upshift directly from gear 1 to 3:
Proceed to point 14.
- Upshift directly from gear 1 to 4 and engine stops:
Leakage in valve body.
Change valve body.
14. Upshift direct from gear 1 to 3.
Check that the following valves in the valve body are OK and not seizing.
- Shift valve 2-3
- Up-shift valve 1-2-3
- Up-shift valve 2-3-4
15. Shifting at incorrect speed.
Choose between the following symptoms.
- Incorrect shifting speed when rolling:
Proceed to point 16.
- Incorrect shift Points with wide open throttle:
Adjust the kick-down cable.
- No kick-down shift from gear 1 to 2 or 2 to 1:
Adjust the kick-down cable.
- No kick-down shift from gear 2 to 3 or 3 to 2:
Adjust the kick-down cable.
- No kick-down shift from gear 3 to 4 or 4 to 3:
Proceed to point 17.
- Shift points too high with partially applied throttle and when changing from 3 to 4:
Worn seals on governor flange.
Check and, if necessary, change the seals.
16. When rolling, shifting takes place at incorrect speed.
Investigate following causes.
- Dirt in governor:
Clean or change the governor.
- Shift valves seizing:
Dismantle the valve body and check the valves.
- Leakage in governor circuits:
Change gear case.
17. No kick-down shift from 3rd to 4th or 4th to 3rd.
Investigate following causes.
- Kick-down cable incorrectly adjusted:
Adjust the kick-down cable.
- Imbalance in governor:
Change governor.
18. Incorrect shift transitions.
Choose between the following symptoms.
- Downshift to harsh at idling speed:
Proceed to point 19.
- Downshift too hard with wide open throttle and kick-down shifting:
Proceed to point 19.
- Shifting too slow with wide open throttle and kick-down shifting:
Proceed to point 19.
- With partially applied throttle and when shifting down from 4 to 3, engine surges:
Proceed to point 20.
- With wide open throttle and when shifting down from 4 to 3, engine surges:
Proceed to point 21.
19. Shifting too harsh or too slow at idling speed, wide open throttle and kick-down shifting.
Investigate following causes.
- Accumulator function or modulator pressure incorrect:
Dismantle the valve body and check the modulator valve and other accumulators and clean the body.
- Clutch plates damaged:
Check and, if necessary, change the plates.
20. With partially applied throttle and when shifting down from 4 to 3, engine surges.
Investigate following causes.
- Kick-down cable incorrectly adjusted:
Adjust the kick-down cable.
- Brake band incorrectly adjusted:
Adjust the brake band.
- One or more valves seizing:
Check that the following valves in the valve body are OK and not seizing.
- Throttle pressure valve (seizing in brake position)
- Time control valve 3-4
- Modulator valve
21. At wide open throttle and when shifting down from 4 to 3, engine surges.
Investigate following causes.
- On models with turbocharger, leakage in turbo pressure hose to transmission:
Check the hose and the turbocharger delivery pipe O-rings.
The turbocharger delivery pipe is located under the valve body cover.
- On all models, one or more valves seizing:
Check that the following parts in the valve body are OK and are not seizing.
- Time control valve
- Downshift valve 4-3
- Traction valve 4-3
- Accumulator A
- Clutch A damaged:
Check and, if necessary, change clutch A.
