Removal
NOTE:
^ Component identifier numbers used in the following illustrations relate to specific steps in the procedures below.
^ Removing of gearbox F35 is shown on a car with a B234 engine, installed with turbo, Air Conditioning (AC) and Traction Control (TCS), others similar.
WARNING:
^ Cables, hoses, wires etc. are secured with so called securing straps of hard plastic.
^ After tightening, the bands are cut, leaving more or less sharp ends in the securing points.
^ Be careful as there is a risk of cuffing your fingers on the sharp ends of the securing straps.
1. Place the car on a ramp and engage 4th gear.
2. To guard against damage to the paint work and against soiling, place protectors over the front and the wings.
3. Disconnect the battery cables from the battery.
4. Remove the battery.
5. Remove the locking clips which hold the accelerator wire's casing in the lead-through and turn the accelerator wire to one side.
6. Models with TCS, remove the positive cable from the hose.
7. All models, disconnect the front distribution box and turn it to one side.
8. Remove the positive plinth (without removing the cables).
9. Remove the positive cable's two clamps on the battery shelf.
10. Disconnect the connector from control module ABS.
11. Remove the battery shelf.
12. Models with Turbocharger, remove the bypass valve from the turbo pressure pipe.
13. Disconnect the temperature sensor from the turbo pressure pipe.
14. Remove the hose clips and the turbo pressure pipe.
15. All models, pull apart the connector on the cable for the speedometer sensor.
16. Remove the reverse light switch's connector.
17. Place a pair of clamping pliers on the slave cylinder's pressure line and pull the pressure line apart.
- Remove the clamp on the oil pressure pipe.
18. Remove the screws in the parting surface which are accessible from the top side, apart from the top screw.
19. Place lifting beam tool No. 83 93 977, or equivalent, on the wheel housing.
- Make sure that the lifting beam rests against the edge of the wing.
- Insert the hook into the engine's lifting eye and tighten slightly, using the wing nut on the lifting beam.
20. Lift the car.
21. Remove the front left wheel.
22. Remove the edging of the wheel housing.
23. Remove the front part of the inner fender.
24. Remove left and middle spoiler units.
25. Remove the battery's grounding cable from the gearbox.
26. Remove the two nuts on the gearbox's universal joint and separate the gear lever.
27. Remove the three screws which secure the ball joint on the wishbone.
28. Remove the nut on the bracket for the anti-roll bar in the wishbone.
29. Remove the two screws which hold the anti-roll bar's bearing.
30. Remove the nut on the bolt in the front engine mounting.
31. Remove the screw of the stay by the wheel housing.
- Put the two washers in a safe place.
32. Remove the screw in the front link of the subframe.
33. Remove the two screws which hold the link.
34. Remove the screw in the rear link of the subframe.
35. Remove the two screws which hold the link.
- One of the screws also holds the steering.
- Put the washer in a safe place.
36. Remove the two screws in the front corners of the subframe.
37. Remove the four screws in the rear corner of the subframe.
38. Carefully fold down the subframe.
- Put the plate between the subframe and the chassis in a safe place.
39. Remove the screws in the two links and remove the subframe.
40. Remove the clamp around the rubber gaiter of the universal joint.
- Cut off clamps without screws with a clipper.
- Be careful with the rubber gaiter.
41. Take the universal joint apart and let the shaft hang down.
- Place a protective cover over the universal joint and driver.
42. Remove the remaining screws in the parting surface (accessible from below).
43. Remove the protection plate for the gearbox.
44. Lower the car.
45. Install the eye on wire tool No. 87 92 251, or equivalent, on the gearbox.
46. Hook the wire on a hoist and tighten the wire.
47. Remove the last screw in the parting surface.
- Pull out and lower the gearbox.
