Correcting a Customer Complaint that Speedometer No Longer Works
Application:
Certain 1995-1996 9000 Models with manual transmission (refer to VIN Serial Nos. below)
Customers may complain that the speedometer no longer works on certain 9000 models with manual transmission. The cause can be a worn speedometer drive gear.
Cars Affected:
1995-1996 9000 models with manual transmission within the following VIN Serial No. Ranges:
S1000001 up to and including S1038095
T1000001 up to and including T1030400.

Action:
Warning
Hot. Risk of burns. While doing the following step, be careful not to touch the exhaust pipe, since this can cause severe skin burns.
1. Clean the area around the sensor (see item 1, Figure 1).
2. Unplug the sensor connector and disconnect it from the bracket.
3. Remove the sensor.
4. Remove the locking plate with screw (see item 2, Figure 1).
5. Lift out the speedometer drive (see Figure 2).
6. Remove the gear from the sleeve and fit the new gear in place.
7. Reinstall the speedometer drive and mount the locking plate and screw.
8. Install the sensor (see Figure 3).
9. Secure the connector to the bracket and plug in the other connector half.
10. Test drive the car and check that the speedometer is operating properly.
