Tie Rod: Service and Repair

Track Rod

To Remove

IMPORTANT: When changing track rods, the steering gear must lie on a stable surface and must not be loaded. Otherwise the pinion and rack can be damaged.

1. Remove the steering gear.
2. Clean and undo the dust excluder clips, and remove the dust excluder.

NOTE: There is only a key grip on the pinion side of the steering gear. When changing the track rod on the other side, the dust excluder on the pinion side must be removed so that the key grip is accessible.

3. Hold the rack in place with a 21 mm open spanner and unscrew the track rod using claw foot spanner 89 96 837.





To Fit
1. Hold the rack in place with a 21 mm open spanner and tighten the track rod using claw foot spanner 89 96 837.
Tightening torque: 80 Nm (59 ft. lbs.)
2. Refit the dust excluder on the track rod and steering gear housing. Fit new clips use pliers 30 16 235 to secure them.
When changing the track rod on the opposite side from the pinion, fit a new hose clip to the dust excluder by the pinion.
3. Refit the steering gear.
