Checking the Gear Change Delay
Checking the gear change delayWhen the selector lever is moved from N to D or from N to R while the engine in idling, a slight jolt will be felt after a brief delay. The delay test below demonstrates the condition of the hydraulics, clutches and brakes.
1. Put chocks under all 4 wheels.
2. Apply the hand brake fully.
3. Measure the time between the moment of moving the selector lever and the jolt. Use a stopwatch. The delay should be:
Position N to D less than 0.7 s
Position N to R less than 1.2 s
Repeat the procedure 3 times and calculate the mean value. Wait at least 1 minute between measurements to ensure there is no residual pressure.
Results of delay test Fault reason
Delay longer than value specified above when changing from N to D
- Insufficient system pressure
- Faulty SLT
- Fault with C1 (slipping)
- Fault with freewheel F2
- Oil leakage in circuit for D
Delay longer than value specified above when changing from N to R
- Insufficient system pressure
- Faulty SLT
- Fault with C2 (slipping)
- Fault with brake B3 (slipping)
- Oil leakage in circuit for R
- Fault with oil pump
- Blocked oil strainer
