DTC B0081 (Passenger Presence Module)
Diagnostic Instructions
- Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure.
- Review Strategy Based Diagnosis for an overview of the diagnostic approach.
- Diagnostic Procedure Instructions provides an overview of each diagnostic category.
DTC Descriptors
DTC B0081 11
Passenger presence module, input high
DTC B0081 4B
Passenger presence module, calibration not carried out
Circuit/System Description
With the ignition ON, a self diagnosis of the SDM and PPS is carried out. If no faults are found, the SDM illuminates both the ON and OFF passenger airbag lamps. If the SDM finds a fault in the PPS, the passenger airbag detonation circuit can be disabled, DTC B0081 can be set and the AIRBAG lamp can be illuminated.
Conditions for Running the DTC
Ignition voltage is between 9-16 V.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
One of the following criteria must be fulfilled for at least 5 seconds.
B0081 11
The passenger presence module preloading test has not been performed successfully
B0081 4B
Passenger presence module not calibrated
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
- The SDM requests the instrument cluster to illuminate the AIR BAG indicator.
- The passenger airbag circuit is disabled.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
- The condition responsible for setting the DTC no longer exists.
- A history DTC will clear once 100 malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.
Diagnostic Aids
NOTE: The following diagnostic aids apply for both current and history DTCs.
Verify that the article number is correct for the car if the SDM or PPS has been replaced.
The DTC may have been caused by an electronic component. If an electronic component (computer, MP3 player, mobile telephone, diagnostic tool etc.) has been placed on the passenger seat the PPS can have commanded the passenger airbag lamp ON and OFF or commanded the belt reminder lamp ON and OFF. Check that there is no object on the passenger seat and erase the DTC. If the DTC does not return, no further fault diagnosis of the passenger presence module is required.
The DTC may have been caused by a heated cushion accessory. The heated cushion accessory can have caused the PPS to command the passenger airbag lamp ON/OFF or commanded the belt reminder lamp ON/OFF. Remove the cushion from the passenger seat and erase the DTC. If the DTC does not return, no further fault diagnosis of the passenger presence module is required.

Circuit/System Verification
NOTE:
- The system must be serviced as one component (Seat foam, module and/or sensor mat). Carry out the Passenger Presence System, preloading test when a component is replaced. Carry out the Passenger Presence System, preloading test.
- Both the SDM and PPS can set DTC B0081, but with different symptom change. It is therefore important to identify which control module set DTC B0081. Use symptom change to help identify in which control module the DTC is set.
- The SDM sets DTC B0081 3A when an incorrect passenger presence module is installed.
1. Verify that DTC B0081 3A is not set in the SDM.
If DTC B0081 3A is set in the SDM: Replace K85 Passenger presence module.
If DTC B0081 3A is not set in the SDM:(When DTC B0081 11 or DTC B0081 4B are set in the PPS, DTC B0081 00 is also set in the SDM.) Refer to the next point
2. Verify that DTC B0081 11 or DTC B0081 4A is not set in the PPS
=8GIf either DTC B0081 11 or DTC B0081 4A is set in the PPS: Carry out Passenger Presence System, preloading test. Refer to Passenger Presence System, preloading test.
If none of these DTCs are set in the PPS: Everything is OK.
