Engine Oil: Description and Operation

The Recommended Oil Grade

All vehicles that leave the factory are filled with synthetic engine oil. These products contain components of very high quality to meet the demands of our engines.

Background
The reasons for the choice of synthetic oil are the demands for increased service life and improved fuel economy in order to reduce environmental impact. Using the recommended oils avoids, amongst other things, a tendency for the build-up of internal deposits in the engine which may block the lubricating system, resulting in higher wear and damaging components in the engine.

Engine performance
In order to enable maximum performance output from Saab engines, the lubricating ability and viscosity are of the utmost importance. It is therefore important that the oil recommendations are followed. Thanks to the recommended oils' beneficial flow properties at low temperature, remote parts of the lubricating system are reached easily, which means reduced engine wear. Similarly, the oils' viscosity at high temperatures has been adapted for optimum function in particular for use in extremely hot markets.

Fuel economy
Selecting oil with low viscosity has a positive impact on fuel economy. However, problems with wear may arise if the oil film becomes too thin due to low viscosity. The recommended oils maintain the right viscosity at different temperatures. Using synthetic oil also results in lower fuel consumption during the warm-up period after starting up.

Useful life
It is important that the oil's properties are maintained fully during the whole change interval. Certain oil additives are consumed too quickly, resulting in damaging internal engine deposits and increased wear. Saab and Mobil oils ensure the fulfilment of today's high demands for durability provided that the service programme is followed.

An often neglected aspect is that more frequent oil changes are necessary if the vehicle is driven often in urban traffic with frequent starts and short driving distances. This is because fuel and condensation water are mixed in greater quantities into the engine oil under such conditions.

Environmental aspect
Lower fuel consumption means lower emissions, primarily carbon dioxide, (CO2.)

Service and oil change
It is important that the oil changes intervals of the Saab service program are followed to guarantee the service life of all engine components and to ensure that engine performance is always optimized. Both distance covered and time between service are crucial. Servicing must be carried out when one of the criteria - service message, distance covered or time - is met.

Recommendation
Use the oils listed in the tables below. The oils meet the above requirements.

We strongly advise against put additives in the engine oil.
There are great risks associated with using oil that does not meet the above specifications. If an oil of too low a grade is used, there is a risk of either wear from poor lubrication or deposits in the engine from prematurely aged oil that cannot keep the engine clean. This can lead to oil duct clogging and engine damage.
