Changing the driver airbag
Product Safety Recall 150 28
Cars in stock must be rectified before delivery.
A personal communication must be sent to the owners of cars already delivered requesting them to get in touch with the nearest Saab garage as soon as possible to have the fault rectified.
Cars affected
Saab 9-5 (9650) MY11 within chassis number range B4000587-B4002795.
NOTE: Some vehicles within the Vehicle Identification Number range are not affected, see separate information for the Vehicle Identification Numbers affected.
Background
In the event of a serious collision, the airbag module may detach from the steering wheel on deployment.
Parts required

Checking the modification identity plate
Before proceeding, check the appropriate box A1 on the modification identity plate.
The "Table of modifications" is shown in the Warranty and Service book. If local regulations require the marking to be made on the car, a campaign plate is mounted.
If the box is not marked, proceed as follows.
Procedure
Removal
1. Press the start button once so that the car goes into the Accessory (ACC) position.
2. Remove fuse 25 in the dashboard fuse box.
3. Turn off the Accessory (ACC) position.
4. Disable the complete airbag system (SIR). See WebWIS - 9-5 (9650) - 8. Body - Airbag SRS - Fault search, fault symptoms - SIR, Deactivation and activation.
5. Release the steering wheel adjustment, lower and pull the steering wheel back as far as possible.
6. Turn the steering wheel to 5 o'clock so that the hole is at the top.
7. Bend the locking spring (2) in with a screwdriver (1) in the hole on the back of the steering wheel. Use a screwdriver with a total length of max. 140 mm.
8. Turn the steering wheel to 7 o'clock so that the hole is at the top.
9. Bend the locking spring (2) in with a screwdriver (1) in the hole on the back of the steering wheel.
NOTE: Be careful with the wiring harness when the airbag is removed from the steering wheel.
10. Pull the connector locking tabs (1) up using a small screwdriver. Remove the connector.
11. Remove the steering wheel airbag module (2).

NOTE: To prevent the airbag unit being installed in another car, mark the airbag unit by painting over the Saab emblem on the front of the airbag unit.
12. Deploy the module fully before disposal. See WebWIS - 9-5 (9650) - 8. Body - Airbag SRS - Adjustment, replacement - Airbag module, handling and disposal.
NOTE: Follow the local regulations of each country.
To fit
1. Connect the electrical connector (1).
2. Adjust the airbag module fixings in relation to the steering wheel spring fastening. Press the wires into the steering wheel centre to prevent the wires from being trapped.
3. Press the airbag module (2) into the steering wheel fully so that the spring fastening engages. Check that the steering wheel module sits firmly and has no play.
4. Install fuse 25 in the dashboard fuse box.
5. Enable the SIR system. See WebWIS - 9-5 (9650) - 8. Body - Airbag SRS - Fault search, fault symptoms - SIR, Deactivation and activation.
6. Enable the side window pinch protection. See WebWIS - 9-5 (9650) - 3. Electrical system - Bus and diagnostic communication - Adjustment, replacement - Window motor, programming and adjustment.
7. Connect the diagnostic tool to the diagnostic socket and delete any diagnostic fault codes.
Marking the modification identity plate
After carrying out the procedure, box A1 on the modification identity plate must be marked. The "Table of Modifications" is given the car's Warranty and Service Book. Mark the box with the number "7" if the procedure was carried out by the importer or with the number "8" if carried out by the dealer.
Fitting the modification identity plate
NOTE: A modification identity plate must only be fitted where local directives require the marking of the car.
For markets which require marking in the car, the plate is mounted as described below if required:
1. Open the bonnet.
2. Clean the body surface location for the plate. Remove the protective plastic backing from the plate.
3. Press in the plate in accordance with the illustration.
4. Mark the plate in the specified box and close the bonnet.
