Compressor HVAC: Service and Repair
REMOVALIMPORTANT: Verifying the purity of the refrigerant with a purity identifier before recovery is recommended.
1. Recover refrigerant using an approved refrigerant recovery system. Measure the amount of oil lost during recovery and record.
2. Remove accessory belt from A/C compressor pulley.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED ON THE HOIST. TO HELP AVOID PERSONAL INJURY WHEN A VEHICLE IS ON A HOIST, PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE VEHICLE ON THE OPPOSITE END FROM WHICH COMPONENTS ARE BEING REMOVED.
3. Raise vehicle.
4. Disconnect engine harness from compressor.
5. On L81 vehicles, disconnect oxygen sensor from engine harness.
6. On L81 vehicles, remove oxygen sensor from exhaust.
7. Loosen suction/discharge to compressor bolts 7-8 turns and remove block from compressor by moving block forward then up.
8. Install shipping cap on compressor hose assembly to prevent moisture/contamination.
9. Install compressor shipping cap before removal to prevent spillage of oil and contamination.
10. Remove compressor to engine block bolts and compressor.
INSTALLATION
NOTE: Compressor oil must be balanced before installation. Failure to balance compressor oil may result in reduced A/C performance and higher system pressure.
Refer to "Balancing Compressor Oil".
1. Install caps on compressor to prevent spillage during installation.
2. Install compressor to engine block bracket with attachment bolts.
Torque:
Compressor-to-Engine Block Bolts: 22 N.m (17 ft-lbs)
NOTE: Do not lubricate seal washers.
IMPORTANT: Always install new seal washers to prevent refrigerant leaks.
3. Remove shipping cap from compressor and compressor hose assembly and install new seal washers.
4. Install compressor hose assembly to compressor and tighten attachment screw while holding hose block flush.
Torque:
Compressor Hose Assembly-to-Compressor Screw: 16 N.m (12 ft-lbs)
5. On L81 vehicles, install oxygen sensor to exhaust pipe.
Torque:
Oxygen Sensor-to-Exhaust Manifold Pipe: 45 N.m (33 ft-lbs)
6. On L81 vehicles, connect oxygen sensor to engine wire harness.
7. Connect engine wire harness to compressor.
8. Install accessory drive belt
9. Lower vehicle.
10. Evacuate, charge, and leak check the A/C system.
