Coolant Temperature Sensor/Switch (For Computer): Service and Repair
ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE (ECT) SENSORREMOVAL
1. Record all pre-set stations.
2. Ignition Off.
3. Loosen radiator drain plug and drain coolant below the level of coolant in the coolant surge tank using a drain pan. Retighten drain plug.
4. Loosen battery cover screws and remove battery cover.
5. Disconnect negative battery cable.
6. Disconnect positive battery cable.
CAUTION: DO NOT TIP BATTERY OVER A 45 degrees ANGLE OR ACID COULD SPILL.
7. Loosen battery hold down bolt and remove battery and battery hold down.
8. Remove Underhood Fuse Block (UHFB) cover.
9. Remove positive battery cable and Electric Power Steering (EPS) wire from B+ terminal at UHFB.
10. Open all retainer clips and remove all cables, lines and harnesses from battery cooling box.
11. Loosen UHFB block connector retaining bolts.
12. Unfasten UHFB from its housing and disconnect forward lamp harness.
13. Remove battery cooling box bolts.
14. Pull inlet duct away from battery cooling box.
15. Disconnect Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor harness connector.
16. Remove ECT sensor.
INSTALLATION
1. Apply RTV sealant (or equivalent) to sensor threads.
2. Install ECT sensor.
Torque:
Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor: 18 Nm (13 ft. lbs.)
3. Connect ECT sensor harness connector. Push connector in until the lock position is felt, then pull back to confirm engagement.
IMPORTANT: Alignment of inlet and outlet ducts with battery cooling box is critical to ensure proper airflow to battery.
4. Position battery cooling box on tray so that inlet and outlet ducts are properly aligned.
IMPORTANT: Over tightening battery cooling bolts will break/crack plastic.
5. Install battery cooling box bolts.
Torque:
Battery Cooling Box Bolts: 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.)
6. Install battery cooling box side support bolt.
Torque:
Battery Cooling Box Side Support Bolt: 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)
7. Connect forward lamp harness to UHFB and attach UHFB into housing.
8. Install UHFB connector retaining bolts.
Torque:
Harness Connector Retainer: 4 Nm (35 inch lbs.)
9. Secure all cables, lines and harnesses into retaining clips.
10. Attach positive battery cable and EPS wire to B+ terminal at UHFB and tighten nut.
Torque:
UHFB B+ Terminal Nut: 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.)
11. Insert battery and install battery hold down bolt.
Torque:
Battery Hold Down Bolt: 16 Nm (11 ft. lbs.)
12. Connect positive battery cable to battery.
Torque:
Battery Terminal Bolts: 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.)
13. Connect negative battery cable to battery.
Torque:
Battery Terminal Bolts: 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.)
14. Install UHFB cover.
15. Install battery cooling box cover and tighten screws.
Torque:
Battery Cooling Box Cover Screws: 2 Nm (18 inch lbs.)
CAUTION: THERE IS A SPECIAL COOLING FILL PROCEDURE ON THE L81 ENGINE TO ENSURE THAT NO AIR BECOMES TRAPPED IN THE COOLING SYSTEM. IF THIS IS NOT PERFORMED, ENGINE OVERHEATING MAY RESULT.
16. Refill cooling system to proper level.
17. Reprogram preset radio stations.
