Transmission Position Sensor/Switch: Service and Repair

TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH

^ TOOLS REQUIRED
- J 36346 Fascia Retainer Remover
- J 45404 Transaxle Range Switch Alignment Tool

REMOVAL

CAUTION: DO NOT TIP BATTERY OVER 45° ANGLE OR ACID COULD SPILL.

IMPORTANT: Record all pre-set radio stations.





1. Remove battery.
1.1. Remove battery cover.
1.2. Disconnect negative battery cable.
1.3. Disconnect positive battery cable.
1.4. Loosen battery hold-down screw and remove battery.
2. Remove battery cooling box.





3. Remove battery tray bracket.
3.1. Loosen battery tray bracket screws and remove bracket.
4. Apply parking brake and place control shift lever in N (Neutral).

IMPORTANT: The transaxle manual shaft must be in N (Neutral) position prior to re-installing range switch.





5. Using Fascia Retainer Remover J36346 remove control cable assembly from transaxle range switch lever.
6. Disconnect electrical harness from transaxle range switch.





7. Remove transaxle range switch lever and nut.





8. Using a screwdriver, bend lockwasher tabs on manual shaft nut retainer down.





9. Remove nut, lock tab washer and flat washer.





10. Remove transaxle range switch bolt stud and flat washers.
11. Remove transaxle range switch.

INSTALLATION
(USING OLD SWITCH)
1. Install transaxle range switch to the manual valve lever.
2. Install washer stud and bolt, then hand tighten.





3. Install flat washer, lock tab washer and nut.
Torque: Transaxle Range Switch Nut: 7 Nm (62 inch lbs.)
4. Place the manual valve lever in N (Neutral) position.





5. Install Transaxle Range Switch Alignment Tool J45404 and align tool pointer to the neutral basic line.
6. Remove alignment tool.
7. Tighten the transaxle range switch bolts.
Torque: Transaxle Range Switch Bolts: 25 Nm ( 18 ft. lbs.)





8. Move lock washer into place by bending tabs up with pliers.
9. Connect electrical harness to transaxle range switch.





10. Install transaxle range switch lever and nut.
Torque: Transaxle Range Switch Lever Nut: 16 Nm (12 ft. lbs.)
11. Install control cable assembly to transaxle range switch lever.





12. Install battery tray bracket.
12.1. Position battery tray bracket and tighten screws.
Torque: Battery Tray Bracket Screws: 16 Nm (12 ft. lbs.)
13. Install battery cooling box.





14. Install battery.
14.1. Insert battery and tighten battery hold-down screw.
Torque: Battery Hold-Down Screw: 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.)
14.2. Connect positive battery cable to battery.
Torque: Battery Terminal Bolts: 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.)
14.3. Connect negative battery cable to battery.
Torque: Battery Terminal Bolts: 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.)
14.4. Install battery cooling box cover and tighten screws.
Torque: Battery Cooling Box Cover Screws: 2 Nm (18 inch lbs.)
14.5. Reprogram radio stations.
15. After adjusting switch, verify engine only starts in P (Park) or N (Neutral). If engine starts in any other position, readjust switch.

INSTALLATION
(USING NEW SWITCH)





1. Make sure transaxle manual shaft is in N (Neutral) position.
2. Install transaxle range switch to the manual valve lever.





3. Tighten transaxle range switch bolts.
Torque: Transaxle Range Switch Bolts: 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)





4. Install flat washer, lock tab washer and nut.
Torque: Transaxle Range Switch Nut: 7 Nm (62 inch lbs.)





5. Move lock tab washer into place by bending tabs up with pliers.
6. Connect electrical harness to transaxle range switch.





7. Install transaxle range switch lever and nut.
Torque: Transaxle Range Switch Lever Nut: 16 Nm (12 ft. lbs.)





8. Install control cable assembly to transaxle range switch lever.





9. Install battery tray bracket.
9.1. Position battery tray bracket and tighten screws.
Torque: Battery Tray Bracket Screws: 16 Nm (12 ft. lbs.)
10. Install battery cooling box.





11. Install battery.
11. 1 Insert battery and tighten battery hold-down screw.
Torque: Battery Hold-Down Screw: 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.)
11.2. Connect positive battery cable to battery.
Torque: Battery Terminal Bolts: 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.)
11.3. Connect negative battery cable to battery.
Torque: Battery Terminal Bolts: 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.)
11.4. Install battery cooling box cover and tighten screws.
Torque: Battery Cooling Box Cover Screws: 2 Nm (18 inch lbs.)
11.5. Reprogram radio stations.
