Upper Column Jacket
UPPER COLUMN JACKETREPLACEMENT
1. Remove jacket attachment bolts.
NOTICE: Do not strike or bump exposed shaft.
2. Remove upper jacket.
3. Clean lower column shaft splines.
4. Ensure upper jacket shaft splines are clean and free from debris.
IMPORTANT: Apply 2 grams (0.07 oz.) of grease supplied in jacket service kit.
5. Apply grease to lower column shaft splines.
IMPORTANT: Ensure steering wheel alignment notch is in the 12 o'clock position. Carefully seat jacket to column housing.
6. Install new upper jacket onto lower column.
7. Hand start all jacket attachment bolts then tighten.
Torque:
Jacket Attachment Bolts: 11 Nm (8 ft. lbs.)
INSTALLATION
IMPORTANT: When installing a "new" service replacement EPS column, the Saturn Service Stall (SSS) must be utilized to properly program the EPS controller contained within the column.
IMPORTANT: Ensure steering wheel alignment notch is in the 12 o'clock position.
1. Position column into vehicle and insert I-shaft onto lower column. Install new I-shaft bolt and tighten. Align index mark is re-installing removed column.
Torque:
I-Shaft Bolt: 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.)
2. Hand start upper column mounting boots.
3. Install lower column-through bolt. Hand tighten until snug.
4. Pre-assemble lock housing and multi-function lever bracket. Hand tighten bolts leaving approximately 3.2 mm (l/8 inch) gap at both bolts.
IMPORTANT: Ensure lock tab fully engages into slot in column.
5. Slide bracket onto column.
6. Hand tighten lower bolt until snug.
7. Hand tighten upper bolt until snug.
8. Tighten lower bolt.
Torque:
Lower Bolt: 8 Nm (71 inch lbs.)
9. Tighten upper bolt.
Torque:
Upper Bolt: 8 Nm (71 inch lbs.)
10. Install upper column mounting bolts.
Torque:
Upper Column Mounting Bolts: 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)
11. Tighten lower column mounting bolts.
Torque:
Lower Column Mounting Bolt: 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)
12. Install ignition housing electrical connectors.
13. Align and install the: park lock cables onto ignition module by snapping into place.
IMPORTANT: Ensure both locking tabs are properly seated.
14. Install multi-function levers.
15. Install EPS electrical connectors to EPS controller.
16. Install upper and lower shrouds, install screws and tighten.
Torque:
Shroud Screws: 4 Nm (35 inch lbs.)
17. Install lock cylinder bezel (snap fit).
18. Install column electrical connectors.
19. Press in knee bolster and install bolts.
Torque:
Knee Bolster Bolts: 4 Nm (35 inch lbs.)
20. Install SIR coil.
21. Install steering wheel.
22. Install SIR module.
23. Test drive vehicle, check for proper steering operation.
24. Connect negative battery cable.
