SUBJECT:
On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) Software Upgrade - Unable to Communicate with ECM Using GENERIC (Non-Tech 2) Scan Tool (Install New TCM Calibration)
Due to revised calibration ID number, this bulletin has been revised and supersedes bulletin 02-T-30, which should be discarded.
MODELS AFFECTED:
2002 Saturn VUE vehicles equipped with V-6 (L81) engines and AF33-5 (RPO M45) automatic transaxles built up to and including VIN 2S812653
CONDITION:
Unable to communicate with the ECM using a GENERIC (Non-Tech 2) Scan tool. One of the diagnostic modes supported in the TCM does not allow the ECM to communicate on the data communications link with certain types of aftermarket Scan tools.
CAUSE:
TCM Calibration
CORRECTION:
Install new TCM calibration on all affected vehicles, as identified above, including vehicles in new Retailer inventory and any that return for service during the applicable warranty coverage period. To determine if an updated calibration is required, refer to the following procedure.
IMPORTANT:
Before installing new TCM calibration, make sure the Service Stall System (SSS) version is 10.5 or greater
PROCEDURE
1. Connect Scan Tool to the vehicle.
2. Navigate to the 3.0L (VIN B) Powertrain Menu.
3. Select ID INFORMATION.
4. Select TRANSAXLE INFORMATION.
5. Read CALIBRATION ID.
^ If TCM calibration ID number is 9938102319, reprogram the TCM with the updated calibration. Refer to "Service Programming System (SPS)" in the Saturn Service Stall System (SSS) User Guide for reprogramming procedures.
^ If TCM calibration ID number is not 9938102319, do not reprogram the TCM. The updated calibration is already installed and reprogramming is not required.
