Buzzing, Grinding, Growling Noise From Rear of Vehicle
(Replace Secondary Fuel Pump Assembly)

2002-2003 Saturn VUE Built Prior to VIN Breakpoint 3S857939

Condition

Some customers may comment on a buzzing, grinding, or growling noise or vibration coming from the rear of the vehicle when the fuel pump is running. This noise may be intermittent.

Cause

The fuel pressure regulator located in the secondary fuel pump assembly may cause this noise.

Correction

Perform diagnostic procedure in this bulletin. If the noise is coming from the secondary fuel pump module (located on the left side of the fuel tank), replace it with new part number listed in this bulletin.

Service Procedure

1. Use Tech 2 Special Test function to run fuel pump and duplicate noise.

2. Determine if noise goes away when fuel line is disconnected and pump is run to drain tank. (Refer to Fuel Tank Draining: Using the Fuel Pump procedure located in the 2002-2003 VUE Engine Service Manual.)





3. If noise goes away when fuel line is removed, the secondary fuel pump is the source of the noise. The secondary fuel pump does not operate when fuel is being drained.





4. If secondary fuel pump is source of noise, replace it with the new part listed in this bulletin. Refer to Secondary Fuel Pump Module Removal and Installation procedures in the 2002-2003 VUE Engine Service Manual.

5. If noise continues with fuel line disconnected while draining tank and noise comes from right (passenger) side of tank, replace Primary Fuel Pump assembly. (Refer to Primary Fuel Pump Module Removal and Installation procedures located in the 2002-2003 VUE Engine Service Manual.)

6. Verify that noise is gone after repairs are complete.
