Steering Column Accident Damage Inspection

This vehicle is equipped with Electric Power Steering (EPS) with the electric motor and torque sensor mounted on the steering column. When involved in an accident resulting in sheet metal damage and/or driver-side air bag deployment, the steering column must be inspected for both electrical system integnty and steering column collapse. Refer to the "Electnc Power Steering Diagnostic System Check in the Electronic Power Steering section of the Chassis Service Manual to determine electrical system integrity and to the "Steering Column Collapse Measurement" procedure, contained in both the Restraints and Chassis Service Manuals.

If the steering column electrical system integrity is not within specification, the complete steering column must be replaced.

If the steering column collapse mechanism is not within specification but the electrical system integrity is within specification, the steering column upper jacket assembly must be replaced.

Steering Column Collapse Measurement

A vehicle involved in an accident resulting in sheet metal damage and/or driver-side air bag deployment will require an inspection for steering column collapse. If the collapse measurement is more than 3 mm, the steering column upper jacket assembly must be replaced. The following procedure must be used for steering column collapse measurement.

1. Remove knee bolster bolts and remove knee bolster.

2. Remove shroud bolts and upper and lower column shrouds.

3. Viewing from the driver side floorboard, inspect the upper steering column mounting capsule nuts and mounting bracket for movement.

4. The left graphic shows a non-collapsed steering column. The right graphic shows a collapsed steering column. If the steering column mounting bracket has moved relative to the capsule nut more than 3 mm, the steering column upper jacket assembly must be replaced. If the measurement is 3 mm or less, the steering column may be reused.

5. Install upper and lower column shrouds, and tighten bolts.
