Powertrain - Clunk Noise Accelerating In Reverse

Clunk Noise While Driving Vehicle in Reverse (Perform Powertrain Mount Balance Procedure)

MODELS AFFECTED:
2002 Saturn VUE vehicles equipped with V6 (L81) engines

CONDITION:
Some customers may comment about a clunk noise from the lower rear engine compartment area while accelerating in reverse.

CAUSE:
This condition may be caused by excessive fore and aft movement of the front powertrain mount.

CORRECTION:
To correct this condition adjust the engine mount pre-loads. Refer to "Powertrain Mount Balance" procedure in this bulletin.

POWERTRAIN MOUNT BALANCE PROCEDURE

CAUTION:
MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED ON THE HOIST. TO HELP AVOID PERSONAL INJURY WHEN A VEHICLE IS ON A HOIST, PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE VEHICLE OPPOSITE FROM WHICH COMPONENTS ARE BEING REMOVED.

1. Raise vehicle.





2. Loosen both front and rear mount-through bolts (do not remove).





3. Loosen cradle-to-rear mount bolts (do not remove).

4. Lower vehicle.

5. Shake powertrain vigorously (front-to-rear) and allow powertrain to settle.

6. Raise vehicle.

7. Tighten cradle-to-rear mount bolts.

Torque:

Cradle-to-Rear Mount Bolts: 50 N.m (37 ft-lbs)





8. Tighten rear mount-through bolt.

Torque:

Rear Mount-Through Bolt: 110 N.m (81 ft-lbs)





9. Tighten front mount-through bolt.

Torque:

Front Mount-Through Bolt: 110 N.m (81 ft-lbs)

10. Lower vehicle.

11. Verify repair.

CLAIM INFORMATION:

To receive credit for this repair during the warranty coverage period, submit a claim through the Saturn Dealer System for J1953 (Mount, Powertrain [Eng/Trans]-Rebalance/Adjust. An "add time" condition is provided should it be necessary to replace the mount.
