Steering Column - Rattling/Tapping Noise

SUBJECT:
Rattle or Tapping Noise from Steering Column Shroud
(Install Felt Insulator to Top Shroud)

MODELS AFFECTED:
2002 Saturn VUE vehicles

CONDITION:
Some customers may comment about a rattle or tapping noise coming from the steering column shroud area. This noise is most noticeable when driving over rough roads.

CAUSE:
This condition may be caused by the vertical support of the top steering column shroud intermittently contacting the steering column.

CORRECTION:
Refer to service procedure in this bulletin for inspection and service.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Verify top and bottom halves of steering column shroud are securely fastened to each other.

^ If top and bottom shrouds are securely fastened together at clip locations then proceed to step 2.

^ If top and bottom shrouds are not secure, secure both halves and retest. If steering column shroud still rattles or tapping noise is present, proceed to step 2. If rattle or tapping noise is gone, no further repairs are necessary.





2. Remove upper steering column shroud.





3. Install small felt piece from Insulator Kit P/N 21056020 to end of vertical support as shown in illustration.





4. Install upper steering column shroud by aligning locating pins in upper shroud with corresponding holes in lower shroud and applying a light download force to snap into position.
