GM Oil Life System Description
ENGINE OIL SCHEDULED MAINTENANCEYour vehicle has a computer system that lets you know when to change the engine oil and filter. This is based on engine revolutions and engine temperature and not on mileage. Based on driving conditions, the mileage at which an oil change will be indicated can vary considerably. For the oil life system to work properly, you must reset the system every time the oil is changed.
When the system has calculated that oil life has been diminished, it will indicate that an oil change is necessary. A "CHG OIL" message displays in the message center.
If the "CHG OIL" message stays on in the message center for about 30 seconds after you start the engine, it means there is less than 10 percent of the oil life left. Change the engine oil soon.
The mileage between oil and filter changes will vary depending on how you driver your vehicle- usually between 5 000 km (3,000 miles) and 10 000 km (6,000 miles) since your last oil and filter change. Never drive your vehicle more than 10 000 km (6,000 miles) or 12 months without changing the oil and filter.
IMPORTANT: The GM Oil Life system does not know how much oil is in your engine, so you need to check the oil level regularly.
Always keep a written record of the mileage and date when oil is changed.
Each time engine oil is changed, the system must be reset.
