A/T - TCC Shudder/Vibration

File in Section: 07 - Transmission/Transaxle

Bulletin No.: 03-07-31-002

Issue Date: March, 2003

Subject:
Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Shudder/Vibration
(Install New TCM Calibration)

Models Affected:

2003 Saturn VUE (AWD models only) with 2.2L L4 engine (VIN D-RPO L61) and VT25E transaxles (RPO M16)

Attention: General Manager, Fixed Operations Manager, Parts Manager, and Technician

Condition

Some customers may comment on a vibration when the vehicle reaches approximately 60-65 mph (97-105 km/h). The shudder or vibration is present at the above mph range during light throttle application and will remain so as long as the engine load remains constant during these conditions.

Cause

Condition may be caused by engine power pulsation being transmitted through the Torque Converter Clutch when engaged.

Correction

Install a new TCM calibration based on the vehicle identification number (VIN).

Procedure

Notice:
Ensure the correct calibration is installed according to the VIN. Incorrect reprogramming of the TCM will adversely affect transmission performance.

1. Connect Scan Tool to vehicle

2. Navigate to the 2.2L (VIN D) Powertrain Menu

3. Select - Special Functions

4. Select - Trans Output Controls

5. Select - TCC Solenoid

6. Select the TCC Enable Solenoid function and turn the TCC off when the vibration is present

If commanding the TCC off did NOT eliminate the condition, refer to the 2002-2003 Chassis VUE Service Manual for additional diagnostic assistance.

If commanding the TCC off did eliminate the condition, install the correct calibration from the calibration information table provided below.

Calibration Information

Install one of the following TCM calibrations based on the VIN. Calibrations will be available on TIS data CD Version 01/2003 (or later).
