Outer Tie Rod Installation
OUTER TIE ROD INSTALLATIONCAUTION: MATING THREADS MUST BE THOROUGHLY CLEANED PRIOR TO INSTALLATION.
1. Thread outer tie rod onto steering gear inner tie rod.
NOTICE: Note marking on inner tie rod from removal procedure. Tie rod to be 174 mm (6.9 inch) between jam nut and rubber boot clamp for initial setting.
2. Tighten jam nut to the tie rod.
Torque:
Jam Nut-to-Tie Rod: 61 Nm (44 ft. lbs.)
NOTICE: Hold ball stud from turning while tightening nut. Damage may occur to seal if stud rotates.
3. Insert tie rod to knuckle using Tie Rod Installer J44015 (or equivalent).
Torque:
Tie Rod End-to-Knuckle Tool: 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
NOTICE: Hold ball stud from turning while tightening nut. Damage may occur to seal if stud rotates.
4. Remove J44015 and install new tie rod nut and tighten.
Torque:
Tie Rod End-to-Knuckle Nut: 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.)
5. Install wheels and tires.
6. Install wheel nuts and tighten in a criss-cross pattern.
Torque:
Wheel Nuts: 125 Nm (92 ft. lbs.)
7. Check alignment, and align as necessary.
