Body - Outside Liftgate Handle Gasket Protrusion

SUBJECT:
Liftgate Outside Handle Gasket is Protruding Out Between die Handle and Base (Replace Liftgate Outside Handle)

MODELS AFFECTED:
2002 and 2003 Saturn VUE vehicles up to and including VIN 3S804419

CONDITION:
Some customers may comment about a foam gasket material protruding out from the liftgate outside handle.

CAUSE:
The gasket material used is becoming dislodged from die outside handle base.

CORRECTION:
To correct this condition, install a liftgate outside handle assembly P/N 22703685).

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Removal





1. Remove liftgate trim panel. (Refer to "Liftgate Trim - Rear" removal procedure in the 2002 or 2003 VUE Body Repair Service Manual.)





2. Using a pick type tool, depress liftgate lock cylinder release button on bottom side of liftgate outside handle assembly.





3. Remove liftgate lock cylinder from outside handle assembly.





4. Disconnect outside handle swing over clip from outside handle rod.

5. Remove liftgate outside handle assembly fasteners and remove handle.

Installation





1. Install liftgate outside handle assembly with fasteners.

Torque:
Liftgate Outside Handle
Fasteners: 4 N.m (35 in-lbs)

2. Reconnect outside handle swing over clip to outside handle rod.





3. Install liftgate lock cylinder to outside handle assembly.

4. Install liftgate trim panel. (Refer to "Liftgate Trim Panel Installation" procedure in the 2002 or 2003 VUE Body Repair Service Manual.)
