Keyless Entry - Transmitter Range Poor
File in Section: 08 - Body and AccessoriesBulletin No.: 03-08-52-007
Issue Date: October, 2003
Subject:
Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Transmitter Range Poor
(Relocate Radio Ground Strap)
Models Affected:
2002-2003 Saturn VUE Vehicles built up to and including
VIN Breakpoint 3S910007
Attention: Technician
Condition:
Some customers may comment they are not able to operate their RKE unless they are close to the vehicle. The operating range of the RKE should be up to 32 ft (10 m).
Cause:
The radio ground strap which runs from the back of the radio down to the H-brace bracket at the instrument panel fuse block may coil itself up on top of the body control module (BCM) (which is located just under the radio). By having this extra wire at the BCM area, the RKE signal from the transmitter may be interrupted causing a reduction in operating range.
Correction:
Remove slack from the radio ground strap. This will allow the ground strap to run perpendicular to the BCM which does not cause any RKE signal deterioration.
Service Procedure:
1. Remove instrument panel fuse box cover.
2. Lightly pull down on radio ground strap wire so excess wire is routed as shown in illustration.
3. Reinstall instrument panel fuse box cover.
4. Verify that the condition has been corrected.
5. If the RKE transmitter performance is not corrected, perform the "Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) System Check" in the 2002-2003 VUE Body Electrical Diagnostics Service Manual. Additional diagnostic aids can be found in the same section under the title "Transmitter and Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Module Range".
