Noise from Upper Steering Column Behind Steering Wheel (Replace Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Coil Assembly)

Models Affected:

2002-2003 Saturn VUE Vehicles built up to and including 3S865013

Attention: General Manager, Fixed Operations Manager, Parts Manager, Technician

Condition:

Some customers may comment on noise from the steering column and/or noise from behind the steering wheel while turning the steering wheel.

Cause:

The SIR coil assembly steering wheel restraint module internal ribbon wire may rub on the backing material, causing a squeaking noise.

Correction:

Vehicles built up to and including VIN 3S865013 will require a new Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Coil Assembly (Roll Connector) to correct the noise.

Service Procedure:

1. Verify that noise is coming from upper steering column behind steering wheel.

Important:
Prior to roll coil removal in Step 2, verify that roll connector is properly seated in housing. If roll connector is NOT properly seated, re-seat and return to Step 1. If roll connector is properly seated, continue with removal procedure.

2. Remove existing Roll Connector. Refer to "Roll Connector (Coil Assembly) - Removal" procedure in the 2002-2003 Saturn VUE Chassis Service Manual, Vol. I.

3. Install new Roll Connector. Refer to "Roll Connector (Coil Assembly) - Installation" procedure in the 2002-2003 Saturn VUE Chassis Service Manual, Vol. I.

4. Verify that noise has been eliminated.
